Shoot to control, not shoot to kill??
Device to zap criminals
CYBERJAYA: Shoot to control, not shoot to kill.
That's what the Taser X26 electronic control device that may be used in future by Malaysian police will do.
Shaped like a gun, it shoots two small darts attached to thin wires up to a distance of 6.4m.
When it connects with the suspect, it delivers a charge of 50,000 volts for five seconds (it can be activated at will) which paralyses, but does not injure, the victim.
During dangerous situations, this will give the police vital time to move in and subdue the suspect without injuring either the officer or the suspect.
The Government has shown interest in the product. Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Musa Hassan and Internal Security Ministry secretary-general Datuk Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof were present yesterday during the launch of the Taser X26.
It is also learnt that a number of police officers had been trained on how to use the weapon.
ASP M.V. Srikumar M. Nair, a Unit Tindakan Khas (Special Operations Force) Training Officer, is one such person.
Srikumar, who was “shot” by the device, said: ”Five seconds feels like five minutes.”
Taser International Inc vice-president Steve Ward said the aim of the device was to reduce injuries and deaths to both officers and suspects.
“With this device, no one gets hurt. About 80 independent medical and field reports that have been carried out verify our claim,” he added.
Comment:
