OVERDRIVE: Designing the Savvy Dec 10:
STYLING played an extremely important role in shaping Proton’s little pocket rocket the Savvy.
The design team at Proton was faced with the challenge of conceptualising a small compact car intended to make a fashion statement - be young and dynamic, sporty, practical, safe, big on performance and playful. The overall exterior also needed to complement the performance and characteristics of the lively 1.2-litre engine that has been engineered into the car.“It was designed to be a very complete small car. Its size is big enough to be a family car, yet as a family car, it is also very sporty in nature, has exceptional power-to-weight ratio and responds to your every command,” said Datuk Kamarulzaman Darus, Proton’s director of manufacturing. In terms of practicality, the Savvy measures 3,710mm and has an overall width of 1,643mm with a height and wheelbase of 1,480mm and 2,395mm respectively, making it competitive in relation to space offered by other cars in its category. The exterior of the Savvy is sleek with new and dynamic lines never before seen in Proton cars it succeeds. The geometric lines that form the exterior silhouette, its broad shoulders, flared (big) wheel arches and an aggressive front fascia pronounce the Savvy’s sporty, spirited, strong and playful personality. The front fascia sports the traditional Proton insignia grille, which is designed after the Malaysian “wau” or traditional kite. The design first appeared in the Gen.2 and will be a permanent feature in Proton’s new generation models, each evolving according to the car’s personality.
In the case of the Savvy, the front grille design is deeper and more pronounced. The front headlight features a crystallised metallic four-headlamp system with integrated front turn signal that projects elegance and energy in the Savvy. Fog lights have also been incorporated into the front bumper for additional lumination in low visibility conditions. The rear meanwhile, sports a hexagonal “honey comb” combi design with multi focal inner reflectors to boost rear visibility and enhance safety while driving.New and subtle styling cues appear in the form of the front door panels that tapers down (at the B pillar) instead of a conventional straight line shoulder from the rear to the front. This Raptor fighter jet-inspired flair is also designed to give the driver better visibility.
Paying great attention to perfecting the exterior fit and finish, as well as the integration of the front bumper, head lights and hood, also ensures a smooth air flow around the body. The car has a 0.35 aerodynamic drag coefficient for reduced wind resistance.Other unique design elements include a centre-mounted exhaust and the absence of a rear boot keyhole that doubles up as an additional safety and anti-theft element. For those who want their Savvy to stand out, especially car enthusiasts, Proton Edar Sdn Bhd has introduced an R3 aerodynamics package that adds colour-coded front bumper lip, rear skirts, side skirts and a roof spoiler to make your Savvy twice as sexy as well as aggressive looking.Available as a five-speed manual or five-speed automated manual transmission (AMT), the Savvy comes in five attractive colours; Stratosphere Blue, Midnight Black, Magma Red, Lime Green and Sterling Silver meant to exude the car’s personality as a stylish, sporty, fun and enjoyable vehicle.
