I've nothing to hide on AP issue, says Senator's son??? YAU MOU GAU....CHOR!!

PETALING JAYA: The Senator’s son implicated in the duplicating of Approved Permits (APs) that had been used to import luxury cars claims he is an innocent party caught up in murky affairs.

He claimed that someone had forged his signature in the duplicated AP documents.

Mohd Zulaimy Muhammad, 39, told The Star: “I am innocent. I am a victim of those who had duplicated the APs. Those who duplicated the APs issued to our company had also copied my signature to falsify the documents.”

He said he had explained the matter to his father Datuk Muhammad Abdul Ghani when the Customs Department started the investigation into the scam late last year.

“He is aware of that. He knows I am innocent.”

Mohd Zulaimy said he had cooperated with the Customs in their investigation and “has nothing to hide”.

He said he would wait for the outcome of the investigation to clear his name.

The Star reported yesterday that the Customs had absolved the senator of any involvement in the scam.

Customs preventive division director Mohamed Adnan Ariffin had said that there was no proof the Senator was personally involved even though they had detected duplicated APs from his company.

Two newspapers had reported on Monday that Muhammad had collaborated with his son to duplicate the APs. The dailies reported that the Customs Department had uncovered evidence of the scam with the seizure of at least 20 imported luxury vehicles brought in with duplicated APs.

The Customs learnt late last year that Muhammad’s company was one of two firms which had imported cars beyond their allotted number of APs, which led to suspicion that duplicated APs had been used.

Muhammad’s company had been importing luxury cars since 1979. His company received about 500 APs a year from the International Trade and Industry Ministry to import reconditioned and second-hand cars.

Contacted yesterday, Muhammad said he was upset with a newspaper, which he claimed had quoted him out of context.

“What I had said was a matter of speaking,” he said. “It’s just like telling someone that if he wants to rob, make sure he runs away with a lot of money. But that doesn’t mean you want the person to rob, right?

“What I said about my son not being a clever fraudster was merely part of a conversation I had with journalists. It was not a statement on my part.

“I do not know what kind of reporting that is, but I assume reporters would know when one is making a statement and when one is merely talking.”

On Tuesday, Muhammad came forward and said he had stopped managing his company since his appointment as a senator six years ago and had allowed his son and staff to run the show.

He also denied any involvement in any shady deals.

The senator said he would not be asking the newspaper for an apology.

“There is no need for that. I am suing them, anyway,” he added.
