Najib: No govt pressure on Asli to retract bumi equity report ??? YAU MOU GAU...CHOR!!

The government did not pressure Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (Asli) into retracting its controversial report of a study on bumiputera equity ownership, which contradicts the official data.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said on Oct 13: “There was no government pressure. This was a statement made on a voluntarily basis by the president of Asli (Mirzan Mahathir).

"Asli is an independent think-tank, so it is up to Asli to decide on its own position over any issue. The government still maintains its official figures issued by EPU (Economic Planning Unit). These are the correct figures," he said.

Najib was speaking to reporters after witnessing the signing of agreement between Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd and Bombardier-Hartasuma Consortium in Kuala Lumpur.

Najib was asked to comment whether Asli had retracted its findings of the report under pressure from the government.

The report by Asli’s Centre for Public Policy Studies on "Corporate Equity Distribution: Past Trends and Future Policy" concluded bumiputra corporate share may be as high as 45%, rather than the official 2004 estimate of 18.9%.

Mirzan had on Oct 11 backed down and agreed to withdraw the report, saying that the bumiputra equity ownership of 45% could not be “vigorously justified”.

(Mirzan had also expressed deep regret over the “hurt and confusion felt by all Malaysians caused by the centre’s report”. He had also said that upon re-examining the methodology and conclusions of the report, Asli had concluded there are shortcomings in assumption and calculation that led to conclusions that cannot be vigorously justified.”)

(On Oct 12, the research director of the report, Dr Lim Teck Ghee said he stood by the report. Lim, who was then the director of Asli’s Centre for Public Policy Studies, said since he could not agree with Mirzan’s statement, and because of the need to defend the position and integrity of independent and non-partisan scholarship, he decided to step down from his position at the end of the month.)

Najib said on Oct 13 the government appreciated the concern about bumiputera equity, however, there must be a degree of national consensus over economic data, especially economic data that “might be of concern and sensitive in nature”.

"We will be fair to all communities. The fact is that the bumiputera community is somewhat disadvantaged in economic terms.

"We will endeavour to make the necessary corrections over time. In the process of correcting that, we will not be unfair to the other races or communities," he said.

On the situation in southern Thailand, Najib said Malaysia would welcome any political settlement by the new government in Thailand to resolve the tension there.

"We have always been hopeful of a political settlement in southern Thailand. This is a good window of opportunity for the new government to take up a new initiative with respect to the problems in the south.

"Our position is that we welcome any political settlement, and we hope that there will be peace in the south," he said, adding that that the government would consider hosting peace talks only if it was invited.
